The PES 3D project begins the study phase for the development of a green engine for nanosatellites

Clúster Mav,

The PES 3D project will allow the development of nanosatellite engines with sustainable and high efficiency fuels through laser additive manufacturing of advanced materials. The initiative, which lasts a year, has been promoted by three small companies 𑁒AENIUM; Pangea Aerospace, dedicated to the design and manufacture of innovative propulsion solutions for the space sector; and Know-How Innovative Solutions, for advanced material joining technologies from the MAV Cluster and the MetaIndustry4 cluster.

The members of the consortium have studied the application of different technologies of additive manufacturing, materials and combustion in order to establish the scientific and technological bases to develop, in the near future, a green engine for satellites and CubeSats.

This engine, developed and marketed by Pangea Aerospace, will enable nanosatellites to maneuver to avoid collisions, deployments and end-of-life orbit changes to avoid creating space junk, thus contributing to increasing sustainability in the space In this sense, the project is part of sustainability and being able to provide sustainable and low-cost propulsion products for NewSpace actors in the future.

The impact of this project represents a turning point in accessibility to space that adds to the revolution of CubeSats and nanosatellites to enable maneuvers. These types of contributions are what underpin the sector's growth forecasts at an annual rate of 10% this decade. It should be noted that space is expected to be the scene of the next revolution for humanity after aviation, internet or telecommunications.

Small satellites are the new paradigm of the sector and the forecast is that the number of these artifacts will multiply by four until 2030 and that new economies of space will appear during the next decade, so it will be essential to develop propulsion cheap, efficient and sustainable chemistry, as the project now in the working phase aims to do.

PES 3D is a project promoted by the MAV Cluster and co-financed by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, through the call for grants to Innovative Business Groups (AEI), within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. The project has a total budget of 379,636 euros and a financing of 303,707 euros.
