The MAV Cluster and the Catalan company Onyriq have been prominent protagonists of the 6th edition of the European Lightweight Cluster Alliance (ELCA) newsletter, which focuses on innovation in advanced materials on a European scale.
In the "Member Spotlight" section, the newsletter highlights the role of the MAV Cluster as a neutral platform that connects companies, technology centers, universities and administrations along the entire value chain of advanced materials and light technologies. With a strong orientation towards the mobility, aeronautics and advanced manufacturing sectors, the cluster promotes collaborative R&D projects, thematic working groups and international initiatives.
Through its participation in ELCA, the MAV Cluster is integrated into a pan-European network of more than 1,200 organizations, strengthening its strategic positioning and facilitating the access of its members - especially SMEs - to funding opportunities such as Horizon Europe. Participation in specialized working groups allows the cluster to stay aligned with European technological roadmaps and advance in areas such as manufacturing, digitization and the circular economy.
The newsletter also highlights an outstanding advance in circular materials led by Onyriq, a member of the MAV Cluster, in collaboration with the University of Girona. As part of the European REPOXYBLE project, Onyriq applies its LOOP technology to develop a new generation of bio-based and depolymerizable epoxy resins for the aeronautical and automotive sectors.
The project relies on an innovative recycling process with low energy consumption, based on an acidic aqueous treatment that allows the resin to break down without damaging the high added value fibres. This approach facilitates the complete recovery of fibers, additives and reactive chemical blocks for reuse, moving towards a true closed cycle model.
With initiatives such as REPOXYBLE, Onyriq contributes to replacing conventional thermosets—difficult to recycle—with high-performance alternatives designed under sustainability criteria, reinforcing European leadership in advanced circular materials.
The prominent presence of the MAV Cluster and Onyriq in the ELCA newsletter shows the growing role of Catalonia in the European ecosystem of light materials. Through international collaboration, technology transfer and the commitment to circularity, Catalan organizations consolidate their contribution to a more competitive, efficient and sustainable industry.
