TERAMAT 2 develops a digital platform to certify the quality of recycled plastics

Clúster Mav,

On June 19, within the framework of one of the virtual seminars of the CEP, the day of presentation of results of the Terrama 2 project, promoted by the Spanish Center of PLÁSTICOS (CEP), CITSALP, DAS-NANO, BESPLANT, ZERTIFIER, GAIKER AND THE MAV cluster.

This second phase of the project has consolidated a technological solution that combines inspection by Terahercis and Technology Blockchain to address two major challenges of plastic recycling: the presence of recycled polypropylene (PP) paint and the lack of traceability in the value chain.

During the event, Carla Zambrano, responsible for R&D in Citsalp, presented the current limitations of the sector to detect impurities and certify the origin of recycled materials. Terahercis's technology, developed in collaboration with DAS-NANO, has proven to be effective to quantify recycled PP paint content (granulated and crushed, industrial and postconsum origin), offering a quick, non-destructive and reliable inspection methodology.

According to Zambrano, the ability to measure precisely the amount of paint present in the material allows for better classes, improve homogeneity and optimize recycling processes, contributing to more efficient and high quality production.

For his part, Joan Jou, CEO of Zertifier, presented the digital part of the project: a blockchain platform that allows recording and certifying each step of the recycling value chain. Through digital identities and sealing mechanisms, the platform ensures the immutability and authenticity of the data, including the percentage of paint, the lot code, the origin of the materials and the applied processes. This system provides security, transparency and confidence for all agents in the supply chain.

With a budget of € 246,668 and a grant of € 192,306 within the framework of the AEI 2024 call of the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, TERAMAT 2 represents a step forward towards a more traceable and efficient recycling, actively contributing to the transition to a real and transparent circular economy.
